Passed away Friday afternoon, August 9, 2013, at 12:50 PM (EST) at the home of her daughter Connie Hambrick in Louisville, Kentucky.

Verla was born November 10, 1940 in the Crossroads Community (Massac County) Illinois. She was the daughter of Roswell A. & Zella Mae (Odum) VanCleve.

Verla is survived by her Children - Lisa Maricle-Copeland, and her husband Jim, of Metropolis, IL, Mary Jo Hoffman-Mason of the Reevesville community, April Lynn Hoffman-Hill & Marvin Mingus of Louisville, KY, Ronnie W. Rixie, and his wife Beatrice, of Grantsburg, IL, Connie Rixie-Hambrick & Rob Morris of Louisville, KY, 16 Grandchildren, 17 Great Grandchildren, a Sister – Amy R. McGuire, and her husband Jim, of Lyndon Station, WI, 2 Brothers - James W. VanCleve of Vienna, IL, Raymond VanCleve, of Janesville, WI, many nieces and nephews and a host of "adopted" children.

Verla was anticipating the birth of two additional great grandchildren, one to be born in October 2013 and the other in February 2014.

In addition to her parents, Verla was preceded in death by her beloved companion – James Eugene Averitt, a Grandson – Chad W. Meyers, a Sister – Mary A. South, 5 Brothers – Danny, George, Joel E., Lloyd L., and Earl E. VanCleve.

Verla was a Certified Nurses Aid. She received her nurse's training at Shawnee Community College. Verla was employed at the Hillview Health Care Center and last worked at Friendship Care Center in Marion, IL.
Verla was of the Christian faith and had attended the Pleasant Ridge Church. She was a faithful volunteer and cook in the Pleasant Ridge Christian Youth Camp (PRCYC) for many years.

Verla enjoyed reading, knitting, making handcrafted crochet items and cake decorating. In recent years, Verla had developed a keen interest in genealogy and enjoyed researching family histories along with her daughter Lisa. She had also enjoyed camping with her companion Gene. Verla had a passion for all things John Wayne and loved watching John Wayne movies. She had a personal copy of every movie that John Wayne appeared in, with the exception of one movie.

Funeral services will be held Friday evening, August 16, 2013, at 7 PM at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna. Pastor Jeff VanCleve will officiate. A graveside committal service will be conducted Saturday afternoon, August 17, 2013, at 2 PM at Berea Cemetery, southeast of Vienna.

Visitation will be from 6 PM – 7 PM Friday at Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna.
