During DeWitt's eighty-one years, he did a variety of things to make a living—logging, painting, real estate broker, insurance agent and auctioneer. However, most of his adult life was devoted to serving as a teacher or a principal at various schools in Arkansas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-two years, DeLois, as well as his parents, Buck and Zola Tidwell, and his brothers, Wilbur, Carl and Clarence.
He is survived by a son and a daughter-in-law; and one granddaughter.
