Alfred H. Schram, 78, a former Merrill resident and one of the leading funeral directors in Wisconsin, passed away Saturday night at the Langlade Memorial hospital, Antigo. He had been seriously ill for four days.

Mr. Schram had long been associated with A. H. Schram and Sons firm here. He retired in 1949 and moved to Deerbrook where he was making his home at the time of his death.

The deceased was born November 8, 1879, in Plymouth, Wisconsin to Albert H. and Emma Bade Schram. His father had entered the furniture and funeral director business in Plymouth and Alfred came to Merrill with his father in 1908 to enter that business here. In partnership with his father and two brothers, Clarence and Gustav, who preceded him in death, two furniture stores and the Schram funeral home were operated in Merrill. Alfred was the director of the funeral home until his retirement. He held Funeral Directors license 1 in Wisconsin and was honored in 1956 as a fifty year member of the Wisconsin Funeral Directors Association, an organization he helped to found.

Mr. Schram was married in Plymouth in 1900 to Louise Niekisch. She passed away in 1944. He was married to Beatrice Roehe in Milwaukee in 1947.

He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church here. Mr. Schram was active in a number of community efforts over the years including many years as a member of the Merrill City Band. He was a former Lincoln County Coroner.

His parents; his first wife; a daughter, LuEllen; two brothers and a sister preceded him in death. His wife, two daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Hass, Minneapolis, and Mrs. Ralph (Jean) Peterson, Sunnyvale, California; a sister, Mrs. Harry (Clara) Peterman, Merrill; and four grandchildren survive.

Mr. Schram will lie in state at the Schram funeral home where friends may call to pay their last respects from 7 o'clock Tuesday evening until 10:30 a.m. Thursday at which time he will be taken to the church to lie in state from 11 a.m. until the hour of services.

Final rites will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. C. E. Kohn officiating. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park.
