In 1846 the family moved to Rusk County, Texas Ruben was fourth of a family of ten children, eight of whom survived to adulthood.
Reuben married Susanna Standefer on November 20,1855.
They made there home in Bell county where child George was born.
The remainder of there children were born in San Saba County, where they lived.
Soon the War between the States began in 1861 and Reuben's brother's John, George, JR. and Frank soon inlisted.
Reuben and others defened the frontier from Indian attacks.
According to state archives, Reuben Washington Gray was mustered into the Texas Rangers as a second Lieutenant and servered four years.
