Obituary: "The Liberal News" (Liberal, Kansas) · Thu, Dec 13, 1923

Charles I Sayre of Arkalon, who for 16 years has been a resident of Seward County, died last Thursday, Dec 6, at the home of his son, Charles I Sayre Jr, 16 miles north of Dodge City, KS. Mr Sayre had been visiting his son for a week and became ill with pneumonia Sunday, Dec 2.

Charles Irwin Sayre (Sr) was born at Newtown, OH, Dec 12, 1840. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah McNeil, Aug 25, 1863, and left the next morning for the Civil War, serving with Co C, Rgt 74 OH Infantry until its close. His father served through the first 3 years of the war.

In 1868, Mr Sayre and his family came to Kansas, locating in Brown County near Horton. They resided there until 1895, when they moved to Fitzgerald, GA, where they made their home for 12 years. At that time, they returned to Kansas, Mr Sayre taking a Soldier's Claim in Seward County, near Arkalon. He had gone to Dodge City for a short visit, expecting to go on to Kinsley to spend the winter with his daughter, Mrs Billy Riley, when his last illness came.

Short funeral services in Dodge City. The body then taken to Kinsley where funeral services at the home of his daughter, Mrs Riley.

Interment was made in the Kinsley Cemetery.

Mrs Sayre's wife died in 1916. He is survived by 6 children:

Mr Sayre had been a member of the Presbyterian Church the most of his life, his membership being in the Liberal Presbyterian Church at the time of his death.
