LAKE LUZERNE — Harold G. Cronin, 86, of Gage Hill Road, died peacefully Saturday morning, Sept. 29, 2012, at his home.

Born Sept. 14, 1926, in South Waverly, Pa., he was the son of James H. and Lillian V. (Thompson) Cronin.

Harry served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater as an LCI (L) 635 and then was recalled to service aboard the USS Chukawan in the Korean War.

He married the love of his life, Rita A. Schichler on Jan. 30, 1954. Rita passed away July 26, 2005, following 52 years of marriage.

As a young man, Harry worked for A&P Tea Company. He was very proud that, at the age of 16, he became the youngest person to be promoted to specialty supervisor. In 1956, he and Rita opened a fish fry in East Greenbush. They moved to Lake Luzerne in 1959 and opened Ranch House on Route 9N in 1960.

Harry also worked for 28 years for the New York State Senate Bill Drafting Commission as a legislative law examiner. He was executive director of Gov. Rockefeller's election campaign, District Coordinator for Sen. Stafford, and was appointed by Gov. Pataki to the Veterans Affairs Commission. He served as vice chairman of the Legislative Committee and Resolution Committee for Department of the American Legion. He was proud to have taken part with Sen. Proller, having the name of Luzerne changed to Lake Luzerne in 1963.

He was very active in the community, serving more than 40 years on boards either as a councilman or town justice. He was Lake Luzerne deputy supervisor for eight years. He was proud to be named Judge of the Year in 1985. He was happy to officiate at numerous weddings and would send anniversary cards to each couple annually.

Harry was past president of Warren County Magistrates and Lake Luzerne Chamber of Commerce. He was a Life Member of the William J. Varney American Legion Post No. 862, Lake Luzerne, a member of the Hudson Sacandaga VFW Post No. 5836 and a member of Elks Lodge No. 81 in Queensbury, serving as their government relations chairman. He was a charter member of Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery Honor Guard.

He was predeceased by his parents; his loving wife, Rita Cronin; a brother, James Cronin Jr.; and two sisters, Mary Jane Cronin and Carol O'Donnell.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Cronin of Lake Luzerne; a sister, Jeanette Klinger of Albany; a grandkitty, Fluffy; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends may call 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Brewer Funeral Home Inc., 24 Church St., Lake Luzerne., at which the William J. Varney American Legion and the Hudson Sacandaga VFW will conduct services at 7:30 p.m. and the B.P.O.E. Lodge No. 81 will hold a Lodge of Sorrow at 8 p.m.
