In an interview with Moses Sumerix of this place, who recently returned from a trip to South-Western Missouri; your correspondent gathered a few items concerning that part of our great country, which might be of some interest to your many readers. Mr. Sumerix spent sometime in visiting in and about Jasper county, where reside I.J. Cunningham and brother, R.G. Bawbell, and others, who left Medina county some ten years ago with but little meats, but prosperous and independent citizens. Mr. Sumerix found the people of that section intelligent and enterprising, social, kind and generous, with schools and churches which will compare favorably with those in Ohio. The land for the most part is rolling prairie, the soil being dark sandy loam of unknown depth, producing without fertilizers an average of 30 bushels of wheat to the acre, and immense crops of corn, as well as all other crops common to Ohio. Apples, peaches and grapes of the finest flavored variety flourish in abundance. While there Mr. Sumerix was shown some specimens of a second crop of potatoes fully matured, and was informed that it was not uncommon for farmers to raise a second crop of wheat without re-seeding averaging from 15 to 20 bushels to an acre. Stock raising is also assuming mammoth proportions cattle and hogs prove the most profitable, with prices about the same as here. Mr.Sumerix visited Carthage, the county seat of Jasper county, memorable in war times for the victory gained by Gen. Siegel over the rebel Gov. Jackson. He wa surprised to find it a growing city of solid business blocks and a booming trade. One hardware merchant of the place Carrie's stock of $30.000. He also visited the spot where Hopestill Montgomery of this place, and a member of the 2d o.v.c., lost his life by drowning. In conclusion Mr. Sumerix declares it to be his opinion, after extensive travels in the East and West, the climate, soil, and future prospects, considered South-West Missouri is by a large majority ahead, and his advice to all wanting homes is to carry out Horace Greeley's advice, in a somewhat modified form, and go South-West.
