Thomas O. Butler Obituary
Mr. Thomas Oscar Butler, 74, Florence, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 1998, at the Columbia Florence Hospital following a sudden illness.
Mr. Butler was born in Mangham, La., in 1923 and was a graduate of Bowling Green College of Commerce. He was a first sergeant in the 165th Regiment, 27th Infantry Division
Company H, U.S. Army, during World War II. He moved to Florence in August of 1950 and began working at Rogers Department Store. He served in several capacities there including president and chairman of the board. During the 42 years he was there, Mr. Butler was known for his work ethic and for his character and for his integrity. He retired in April 1992. He served this community through his membership at the First United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees. He was a longtime member of the District Laity Club, which was responsible for establishing many scholarships for seminary students. Mr. Butler enjoyed hiking, especially in the Smoky Mountains, swimming and gardening. He enjoyed meeting with old friends in the Co. H Association. He was very interested in the Florence-Lauderdale Public Library and served as treasurer of the Friends of the Library. He most recently worked as an accountant with Henry J Jones & Co. The funeral service will be today at 10a.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Barry Anderson and Rev. Leonard McDowell officiating and Elkins Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends in the church parlor beginning at 8:30 a.m. A service will be at the Mangham Methodist
Church, Mangham, La., on Saturday at 2 p.m. Burial will follow in the family plot of the Gwin Cemetery, Mangham. Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Doris Pace Butler, Florence
