Dora E. Bean

Dora E. Bean, 72, native of Fairfield, died at 2 p.m. Sunday at her home, 406 North D. She had been in failing health for some time.

Dora Bean devoted much of her life to the teaching profession. Following her advanced education she began her teaching career at Richland in 1934. After two years she moved to Anamosa where she taught 1936-1938; at Morningside Junior High in Sioux City 1938-1939.

She moved to Highland Park, Ill., where she taught from 1939 to 1973. She was a home economics teacher and served as home economic supervisor at Deerfield District School No. 113 at Highland Park from 1960 until 1973 when she retired and returned to make her home in Fairfield.

She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, Chapter HA, PEO; also a member of the National Retired Teachers Association and Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary of which she served as president 1979-1980.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Carl Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Jefferson County Hospital Auxiliary or the First United Methodist Church.

Dora E. Bean was born March 31, 1911, in Fairfield. She was the daughter of Walter G. and Minnie Down (sic. Downs) Bean. She graduated from the Fairfield High School and received her BS degree at Parsons College and her MA degree at Columbus University in New York.

Survivors include a niece and six nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
