Visitation for family and friends of Katherine T. "Kitty" Citizen of Grass Valley will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Nevada City. Burial will follow at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City.
Mrs. Citizen died Thursday, April 8, at Sacramento Mercy Hospital. She was 84.
She was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Omaha, Neb., to Clyde and Katherine (Hall) Tipton. She received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Omaha and later a Masters in Library Science from the University of Southern California. She married Jack. T. Green in 1942, in Texas. He was a pilot in World War II and was killed in action in Burma-India. After the death of her husband, she and her son, Thomas, moved to California, where she met and married Ted L. Citizen in 1947. They lived in Auzusa, where they owned a camera store and later moved to Yorba Linda.
She was the district librarian in Yorba Linda for 25 years. She received many awards for her commitment to expanding library services in her community. She was also involved in the school system, promoting better educating and parental involvement by serving on several school boards. She was the founding president of a Southern California Chapter of Soroptimist and was involved in PTA and Girl Scouts. She was the choir director at First Baptist Church in Brea for 25 years. She moved to Grass Valley in 1987, to be close to her daughter and family. She was active in the First Baptist Church of Nevada City, as well as R.S.V.P. and the Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was also a leader in the American Baptist Women's Regional Group. She enjoyed music, travel, poetry, sewing, knitting and spending time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Bill Gebur of Nevada City; son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Celia Citizen of Las Vegas, Nev.; grandchildren Kristina Andrade of Las Vegas, Nev., Douglas Citizen of Las Vegas, Nev., and Michelle Gebur of Sacramento; and six great-grandchildren of Las Vegas, Nev. She was preceded in death by her husbands Jack Green in 1942, and Ted Citizen in 1975.
