Chesapeake - Joan Elizabeth Langlois Scull passed away peacefully on the morning of July 31, 2013. The second youngest of eight children, she was raised by Henry Langlois of Maine and Lulan Rhodes Langlois in Alabama, where their household was the only Catholic family in Clarke County. Growing up in Suggsville, she excelled in basketball and was an acquaintance of Harper Lee, a local girl her age from nearby Monroeville who later wrote To Kill a Mockingbird. Joan also had many great stories to tell from her childhood. She came to Virginia at the end of World War II and married a veteran, Robert Drake Scull of Norfolk. A traditional homemaker with a loving and sweet disposition, Joan was praised for her fried chicken, pancakes and turkey dressing. She devoted her life to raising her children and helping to raise her grandchildren. In doing so, she placed a special emphasis on good works, artistic expression and moral virtue. Joan raised four children, the eldest of whom, Margaret Anne, died the same week as her father and aunt in two separate incidents in 1968. A lifelong Catholic, Joan loved to attend mass and say the rosary. She also followed politics very closely. A great admirer of John F. Kennedy in particular, she once took her children out of school to hear him speak when he campaigned in Norfolk in 1960. Joan loved to sing, dance and swim. When she went to the beach she was frequently reprimanded by the lifeguard for swimming far out beyond the breakers, but always did it again. Joan is survived by a brother John Riggs Langlois of Virginia Beach; a sister Kathryn Langlois Fox and her husband Fleming Fox III of Richmond; a son Robert Drake Scull, Jr. of New Bern, NC; a son John Barry Scull of Norfolk; a daughter Carolyn Marie Maddox and her husband Michael Maddox of Chesapeake; two grandsons Brian Melchers of Virginia Beach; and Danny Melchers and his wife Jamaila of Newport News; and a granddaughter Melissa Marie Maddox of Chesapeake. A funeral mass will be held for Joan at 10:00AM Wednesday, August 7 in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. The graveside services will take place in Forest Lawn Cemetery. H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling arrangements.
