Mrs. Strobeck died Thursday, May 5, at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital. She was 96.
She was born July 28, 1908, in Trinity County, Hayfork, to Delia Mead and Alfred R. Gates. She was the youngest of seven children. She graduated from high school in Paso Robles in 1924, and attended College of Pacific in Stockton for two years. After college she moved to Fresno where she opened a ladies clothing store and developed her skills as a milliner. In the early '30s she moved to Grass Valley and became a proprietor of a dress and hat shop on Mill Street. In the early '40s she moved to the San Francisco area. She married Foster Strobeck in 1948, and they led a typical life of a military couple traveling from post to post throughout the USA including a long assignment in Hawaii. In 1960, her husband retired from the Navy and they moved to San Carlos where she lived until 1980. While there she worked for the Drama Department at the College of San Mateo. She was an active member of the San Carlos Club. They moved to Alta Sierra and became active in the Alta Sierra Country Club as proprietary members. She enjoyed gardening, bird and animal watching, sewing, tailoring, writing, reading, traveling, pets, wildflowers, hiking, walking, and playing bridge.
She is survived by her niece, Jean Collard of Hayfork; nephew, James Gates of Elk Grove; god daughter, Donna Boggs of Cincinnati, Ohio; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Foster B. "Dutch" Strobeck on July 6, 1999.
