Toward the end of a week long military encampment, held in Kingston, NY, a tragic accident occurred. On July 13, 1855, men of the 7th New York State Militia were firing muskets, using blank cartridges. Hundreds of people had gathered to watch. During the excitement, one soldier had unknowingly loaded a live round. As he fired, a ball struck and fractured the head of little Minerva, who was nursing in her mother's arms. She died four days later, in Thomas Clark's Hotel, Kingston, NY. After many years of searching I finally located her broken gravestone on September 15, 1984.
Her father was Jeremiah Castle, born 5 Sept 1829, West Hurley, Ulster County, NY and died 26 Sept 1885, High Woods, Ulster County, NY. Burial place unknown.
Her mother was Mary Ann Morris, born 21 Nov 1837, West Hurley, Ulster County, NY and died 21 Jan 1912, Zena, Ulster County, NY. Woodstock Town Clerk's records say she is buried in Zena but no gravestone could be located!
Jeremiah and Mary were married on June 5, 1853.
Following are the other known children of Jeremiah and Mary Morris Castle, siblings of Minerva.
