Sarah Dickson

Daughter of Thomas Dickson and Nancy McMillan pioneers to Ashe Cty NC.

born ca 1755/66

Wife of
1 Alexander Smith son of Hugh and Jane.
2 Maybe of Samuel Riley who was part NA. 1798 Knox Cty Tenn

She disappeared. She left behind at least 4 SMITH daughters.

It is said she ran off with a "someone dark as a mulatto" as per her husband's divorce petition.
Now thought to have been a Native American.
She may have had a daughter Polly with the man.
She may have had 3 daughter with RILEY: Charlotte 1802, Mary Ann 1807 and Margaret 1808

Her grave is here with her parents "in memory".

Children:
3 unknown daughters Smith and Mary Polly Smith.
3 daughters with Riley

NOTE
New info 11/2013 from descendant Nancy McGinty.

Nancy says the Alexander Smith request for divorce stated that his wife ran off with a person "dark as a mulatto". This hints that maybe she went off with a Native American and not a slave or free black man.

Nancy says that Sarah may have had 3 daughters with the NA Samuel Riley when they arrived in Tenn.
She also had 3 daughters with Smith.
Charlotte Riley b 1802
Nary Ann Riley 1807
Margaret Riley 1808

They were listed as born and living in Cherokee Tenn that became Washington Cty (NE corner).

As young adults the sisters lived in Knox Cty, Tenn
They were associated with the David Smith family.
David was the brother of Sarah's first husband: Alexander Smith.
David's wife was Elizabeth and she may be an unknown daughter of Thomas Dickson but it is doubted.

Nancy has a document that says Samuel Riley m Sarah Smith in 1798 Knox Cty Tenn.
Other Riley families of Tenn are associated with the Cherokee.
Her name is sometimes Sarah Caroline but back then middle names were frowned on by the church.

Nancy has had DNA done and it shows 14% NA and matches with Dickson, Greer, Gentry and Cherokee White Owl Raven.
