The Holden Progress-Sept 27, 1962-Fred Caldwell Dies Lifetime Resident-Fred Caldwell a lifetime resident of this community died Sunday, Sept 23, at the age of 89 years. He had been in failing health since suffering a stroke in 1954. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Cast Funeral home with the Rev. Gilbert Hume, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Holden, officiating. A mixed quartet, Mrs. Hooker Williams, Jr., Mrs. Charles Weeks, Rayburn Henry and Gilbert Hulme sang “Sometime We’ll Understand”. Mrs. G.V. Redford was at the organ. Pallbearers were Robert Simpson, Delbert Bedsaul, Cecil Bedsaul, William T. Roach, Ray Sturgis and Tom Long. Burial was in the Holden Cemetery. Fred Lee Caldwell was the son of William and Mary Morris Caldwell and was born Sept 8, 1882, in Holden. He married Hazel Paul July 1, 1909 and they made their home here. Mr. Caldwell was a veteran of the Spanish American War, serving with the US Navy from 1901 to 1905. For many years he was a paint foreman for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and also served as the foreman of the Bridge and Builders unit. He served on the executive board for maintenance and Way for the Missouri Pacific for more than 35 years. Mr. Caldwell retired in 1944. He is survived by his wife, Hazel of the home; a brother, Ralph Caldwell, Glade Water, Tex.; two sisters Mrs. Ruby Bohannon, Holden and Mrs. Ada Bonnett of Ft. Collins, Colo.; several nieces and nephews. Those who came from out of town for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Caldwell, Glade Water, Tex.: Mrs. Pauline Kenny, Baxter Springs, Kans.; Mr. and Mrs. William T. Roach, Liberty; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Goode, Warrensburg; Mrs. Paul Smith and daughter Linda, North Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Bob Simpson, Pleasant Hill; Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Bedsaul, Grandview. h/o Hazel Paul
