Obituary published in the Seattle Times, May 15, 1969, page 62, col. 3: "William H. Hicks, 90, a Spanish-American War veteran, of 6118 -9th Avenue N.W., died Tuesday in a [VA] hospital after a long illness. For 32 years Mr. Hicks was a King County deputy clerk. He was appointed in 1935 as a bailiff for Superior [Court] Judge John A. Frater. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Butterworth mortuary, followed by cremation. Mr. Hicks served in the Philippines in the Spanish-American War with the first Washington Volunteer Infantry. He was past state commander of the United Spanish-American War Veterans in Washington and Alaska, a life member of Fortson-Thygesen Camp 2, Spanish War Veterans, Ballard Post No. 3063, Veterans of Foreign Wars; Rainier Lodge 189, F. & A. M.; Amethyst Chapter 138, Order of Eastern Star, and the Pioneer Association of Washington. Born in Ennis, Texas, Mr. Hicks came to Seattle in 1888. He attended West Queen Anne and Mercer Elementary Schools and Central High School. Survivors include his wife, Mable, and a daughter, Mrs. Francis J. Mahoney, Seattle." [NOTE: According to the 1882 Washington Territorial Census, Harry's family was in Seattle at that time.]
