NORTH WILKESBORO -- Mrs. Zona Eva Cardwell Spears, 82, widow of Martin Rayvaughn Spears, of Parsonsville Road, died Wednesday, April 7, 1999, at Britthaven Nursing Home.

Mrs. Spears was born June 20, 1916 in Wilkes County to Frank Miles Cardwell and Laura Ann Ashley Cardwell. She was preceded in death by one son, James Rayvaughn Spears. Surviving are three sons, Dean and Eugene Spears of Purlear, and Ralph Spears of Wilkesboro; two daughters, Anne Nifong of Kernersville, and Barbara Pipek of Bowie, Maryland; 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Spears was the granddaughter of Thomas M. Ashley and John Henry Cardwell, who were Prisoners of War in the Civil War. She was a direct descendant of Sarah Boone, sister of the great pioneer, Daniel Boone.

She was a member of Stony Hill Baptist Church in the Parsonsville Community of Wilkes County since the early 1940's. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at Stony Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. David Testerman and the Rev. Wayne Osborne officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 6:30 until 8:30 tonight.
