Three People Drown In Cle Elum River

July 30, 2005

SALMON LA SAC - Searchers on Saturday recovered the body of a Seattle man who drowned in the Cle Elum River, a day after removing the bodies of a father and daughter who also were caught in whirling current.

The body of Robert Mack, 45, was found Saturday afternoon by authorities searching the river's China Falls area, near a popular campground.

The bodies of Michael Templin and his 14-year-old daughter, Taylor, both of nearby Ronald, were recovered from the river Friday night.

The three victims drowned Friday afternoon. Mike Templin saw his daughter, Taylor, 14, having trouble in the water and he jumped in to try and save her.

"These currents are very strong," explained Bob Gubser with the Kittitas County Sheriff's Department. "Moving water is unpredictable and the strongest of swimmers can't always get out of that current.

Not long after he went in the water, Templin, 37, also got caught in the current. A family friend, Robert Mack, was on shore and saw Templin struggling, too. Mack jumped in the river to try and save the father and daughter.

The two men and the teenage girl all became trapped in a whirlpool.

"It's whitewater, it's churning, it's at the bottom of the falls and those are never safe," said Kittitas County Undersheriff Clayton Myers. "They all ended up on the left side and there isn't any way to get out of there from the left side. It simply cycles you back around and then pushes you down into the bottom."

Robert Mack's 15-year-old daughter saw everything happen, and when her best friend was eventually pulled out of the water she performed CPR on the shore. Sadly, she was unable to revive her friend.

"That's an extremely good reaction out of her to be able to do that after she'd just seen two people she knew very well go into that water. They should be very proud of her," said Gubser.
