A memorial service for Alta M. Baker, 89, formerly of Riverview Apartments, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Cummings Funeral Home, Watertown, with the Rev. John Joslyn, pastor of the Clayton United Methodist Church, officiating. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in Dexter Cemetery. Mrs. Baker died at 1:03 a.m. Wednesday at the Samaritan-Keep Home, Watertown, where she had been a resident since May 30, 1988. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the Clayton Volunteer Ambulance Fund. Surviving are a son, David H., Watertown; five daughters, Mrs. Roy (Gertrude) Barr, Cape Vincent, Mrs. Harold (Hazel) Mellon, Clayton, Marjorie Baker, Oceanside, Calif., Mrs. Walter (Shirley) Connell, Adams Center, and Mrs. Robert (Elsie) Stewart, Silver Spring, Md.; 21 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. C. Lillian Murrock, Copenhagen; nieces, nephews and cousins. A son, Charles A., two grandchildren, a brother, Edwin G. Beadle, and four sisters, Ruth M. Baker, Rhoda Williams, A. Catheryn Cone, and A. Leata Beadle, died before her. Born Sept. 23, 1901, in Oxbow, daughter of George and Clara Colony Beadle, she was graduated from Copenhagen High School and married Howard H. Baker Dec. 30, 1920, in Barnes Corners. The couple operated a number of dairy farms in the area, with Mrs. Baker later employed in the maintenance department at Stebbins Engineering, Watertown. Mr. Baker died March 7, 1973, at the age of 77. Mrs. Baker was a former member of the Clayton United Methodist Church. [Watertown Daily Times (NY), 27 December 1990, Thursday p28].
