Dr. Donald S. Baim
BAIM, Dr. Donald S. Died November 6, 2009, at age 60, of complications of surgery for treating newly-diagnosed adrenal cancer. Dr. Baim received his undergraduate degree in Physics from the University of Chicago in 1971, and his MD degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1975. Following training in Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Stanford University, he was recruited to the Harvard Medical School Faculty in 1981 to establish an Interventional Cardiology program at Boston's Beth Israel, now the Beth Israel Deaconess. Under his direction, this program grew to be a national leader in the evaluation of new interventional devices such as stents, and trained more than 60 Fellows, many of whom are now themselves leaders in the field. He was editor of the standard textbook in the field - Grossman's Cardiac Catheterization, Angiography and Intervention (now in its 7th edition), and author of more than 300 peer-review articles. Dr. Baim was promoted to Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School in 1994, at age 45. He moved to the Brigham and Women's Hospital in 2000. After 5 years representing the Brigham in a Boston wide consortium to develop new medical devices (CIMIT), Dr. Baim joined Boston Scientific in July 2006 as Executive Vice President and its Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. Under his leadership, the impact of the 500-person Clinical Sciences group there was strengthened considerably, emphasizing its role in serving as "Voice of the Patient" throughout the lifecycle of each Boston Scientific product. Dr. Baim was a talented interventional clinician who helped many thousands of patients, as well as a high level clinical scientist, practical expert in device design, and an exemplary educator. He excelled in his ability to see new patterns in complex data, and to explain them in readily understandable terms. Services will be held at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, CANTON, MA on Monday, November 9th at 1:30pm. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence on Monday following the service until 8:00 PM, then Tuesday through Thursday from 2:00-8:00 PM.
