Inscription

TO THE MEMORY OF
BRIGADE MAJOR
ROBERT VANS AGNEW
A Lieutenant in the 1st Reg of Guards
and eldest son of of Robert Vans Agnew
Esquire of Barnbarrow in the County of
Wigton by his Wife Frances Dunlop Sister
to the General whose Remains are also
here deposited.
On the 17th Day of August 1804 when
little more than 25 Years of Age was
this Young Man, the Heir of an Ancient
Race, cut off by the inexorable Yellow
Fever.
His afflicted Parents wish by this
Monument to mark the Spot where the
earthly Remains of their Hopes & Affections
are deposited.
He was all they could have wished and
loved most tenderly in a Son. They feel this
World has no Consolation to offer to Parents
for such a Loss and They derive theirs from
the Hope of meeting him again beyond the
Grave, when they shall part no more.

Gravesite Details

The monument is within a wrought-iron enclosure. On one side of the marker is Brigadier General Andrew Dunlop (the uncle), and on the other side is Robert Vans Agnew (the nephew).
