William Hasten Buchanan was born on December 10, 1864, three months after the untimely death of his father, Moses Campbell Buchanan, Sr. His mother, Elizabeth Adeline Cobb Buchanan, was left a young widow with four children under six years of age. William was about four years old when his mother married William H. Snider, a Civil War veteran and brother of a neighbor, Melissa Snider Mauk. In time six Snider half siblings were born. William Hasten married Mary Jane "Janey" Mauk Jan 11, 1888. They had grown up in the same area where common ancestors had settled earlier in the new Republic of Texas. They set up their own household here near family and friends. They were newly weds with one child when the 1890 census was enumerated. Unfortunately the 1890 census records burned.
