Geoffrey was the son of Lt. General Glen Robbins Birchard, Jr. and Virginia Leigh (Brooks)Birchard

Geoff served two tours of duty in Vietnam where as a helicopter pilot he was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses and a Purple Heart.
