Nevada County Sheriff: 1983-1993

Services for William L. "Bill" Heafey of Nevada City will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Nevada City chapel of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary. Burial will be at Sierra Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Nevada City.
Mr. Heafey died Wednesday, Jan. 16, at home. He was 66.
He was born April 10, 1935, in Oakland to Leslie J. and Beatrice L. Heafey. He graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School in Oakland in 1953. He received a bachelor of science degree from San Francisco State University in 1957 and master's degrees from Golden Gate University in 1970 and Chapman University in 1974.
He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for nine years. He married Kathleen "Kay" Oswold on Sept. 14, 1957, in Oakland.
He worked for the Alameda County Probation Department from 1956-57, Nevada County Probation Department from 1968-82, and was Nevada County Sheriff from 1983-93.
He was a member of the California State Sheriffs Association, Nevada County Law Enforcement Association and the Nevada City Elks. He enjoyed gardening, reading and travel.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Kay Heafey; daughters Linda Heafey of Melbourne, Australia, Shannon Friedberg of Grass Valley, and Maureen Gerecke of Rohnert Park; son, David Heafey of Sacramento; and grandchildren Jenna, Joshua, Gabriel and Codi.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sierra Nevada Cancer Center, 155 Glasson Way, Grass Valley; or Hospice of the Foothills, 12399 Nevada City Highway, Grass Valley.
Arrangements are under the direction of Hooper and Weaver Mortuary.
