Steffen Greenly is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents - Joseph Henry Chu (1914 - 1993) and Helen Bo Hing Chang Chu (1917 - 2007). In addition to being a soccer coach at Fountain Valley High School (FVHS), played soccer himself and helped take the FVHS Barons soccer team to a Sunset League championship and to a CIF Finals appearance during the 1994-1995 season.
He was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in 2003 when he was 25 years old, but he found the strength to act as an assistant coach to the girls' varsity team that year. That was also the year the Steffen Greenly Award was created in his honor at FVHS to recognize students who demonstrated the trains he showed while battling his disease: courage, desire, strength, determination, resilience, and perseverance.
