Junior Ray Gary was the only child born to Jodie Ray Gary and Emma Dell Guice. He was born in Mississippi on February 10, 1934.

Junior had eight half-siblings as a result of his father's other marriages: Charles Ray Gary, Don Eugene Gary, Billy Gene Lott, Jodie Lavelle Gary, Glen Edward Gary, Rebecca Pauline "Becky" Gary, Joyce Darlene Gary (Lee), and Fred Laverne Gary. His mother had no other known children.

On November 11, 1964, Junior married Vanita Marie Tenery in Texas. Together, they had two sons: Sammy Ray Gary and Charles Henery "Chuck" Gary. The date of their separation is unknown. They divorced on July 18, 1969 in Taylor, Texas, but it's possible they actually separated prior to that date.

Junior went on to marry Rebecca Rhea Plummer, presumably in Texas, though the date of their union is unknown at this time. Their first son, Jimmy Ray Gary, was born in December 1967, but Junior's divorce to his first wife wasn't final until almost a year and a half after his birth. Junior and Rebecca went on to have three more children together: Billy Ray Gary, Debra Renee Gary, and Michael Adam Gary.

Junior passed away at the age of 45 on October 12, 1979 in Bell County, Texas, and is buried near his mother at Angleton Cemetery in Brazoria County.
