Marten E. Dirks, 47, of Rochester, passed away Thursday, July 25, 2013, at REM Home at Northern Hills in Rochester.

Marten was born Oct. 28, 1965, in Houston, Texas, to Arnold and Etta Mae (Polzin) Dirks. He grew up in Houston and attended Worthington High School. In 1988 he moved to Rochester. He was employed by ABC and worked in many businesses in the Rochester area.

He had a great love for sports and has participated in the Special Olympics for many years. Bowling was one of his favorite events. Along with sports he enjoyed going to work every day to spend time with co-workers and friends.

Marten is survived by his mother, Etta Mae, of Lake City; a sister, Carmen (Chris) Paulsen, of Cypress, Texas; a brother, Steven (Diana) Dirks, of Houston, Texas; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold; paternal grandparents, Cornel and Meta Dirks; and maternal grandparents, Frank and Julia Polzin.

A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the United Methodist Church in Lake City, with the Rev. Kristine Marshall officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 30, at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel in Lake City. Friends also may call one hour before the service at the church. Burial will be the Woodlawn cemetery in Stewartville.
