John, a Shawnee Indian, was the son of Thomas Andrew, Jr. & Florence (Longan) Captain. He was the grandson of Thomas Andrew & Martha Ellen (Gullet) Captain.


He was married to Pearl, maiden name unknown.


On April 22,1940, John, age 27, & Pearl, age 30, lived in Wyandotte, Ottawa Co, OK, where he worked as a truck driver. This was also their home in 1935. They had two children, Nadine, age 5, and Harold, age 3.


"John Captain Ill at Home East of City

John Captain, former East Side resident, who is seriously ill, arrived Sunday at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Captain of East Side, after being flown in a chartered plane to Tulsa from his home in Hood River, Ore.


Captain, whose wife and four children are to arrive soon from Oregon, was brought from Tulsa to East Side in a Lance-Wene funeral home ambulance from Baxter Springs, Kas.


He became ill several weeks ago and was taken to a Portland, Ore., hospital and then returned to his home in Hood River."

"JOHN SAMUEL CAPTAIN

John Samuel Captain, 36-year-old East Side resident, died at the Miami Baptist hospital at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday after an illness of two months.


Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pearl Captain, of the home; two daughters, Nadine and Patty, and two sons, Harold and Sammy, all of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.S. Captain, East Side; five brothers, Thurman, Leo, and Dennis Captain, all of Miami Route 1; and Charley Captain, Tuba City, Ariz.; three sisters, Mrs. Homer Sullivan, Baxter Springs, Kas., Mr. Rolland Kropp, Baxter Springs, and Miss Virginia Captain, Miami Route 1.


Services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o[clock at the No. 5 schoolhouse, with the Rev. J.F. Murrell of Miami officiating. Burial will be in the Captain cemetery under the direction of the Cooper Funeral home of Miami."
