Capt. Humphrey Davenport, s. of William Davenport and Ann Edwards, bapt. Oct. 11, 1702 at the Hartford 2nd Chh. He d. Jan. 19, 1749/50 at Coventry, Conn., Æ. 48. At the Oct. 1738 session of the Conn. Assembly, "Mr. Humphrey Davenport" was confirmed "to be Lieutenant of [the] first company or trainband in the town of Coventry..." Then at the Oct. 1749 session of the Conn. Assembly he was confirmed as "Captain of the 4th company or trainband of the 5th regiment in the Colony..."

On May 9, 1737 at Coventry, Conn., Humphrey m. Hannah Fitch, dau. of Capt. Jeremiah Fitch and Ruth Gifford of Coventry, b. Jan. 18, 1700/1 at Lebanon, Conn. She d. Dec. 4, 1785 at Mansfield, Conn. Hannah is interred at what Hale called the Ancient Cemetery at Windham, Conn., on the Old Coventry Road near the Windham town limits, now known as the Ridges Cemetery at Mansfield.

Hannah was the granddaughter of Rev. James Fitch and Priscilla Mason of Saybrook, Conn. and later of Norwich, Conn. She was the great granddau. of Maj. John Mason of 1633 Pequot War fame.

Unless an estate record at the Windham Probate District at Willimantic, Conn. proves otherwise, there is no record that Capt. Humphrey and Hannah (Fitch) Davenport had children.

On the day Humphrey died he was 47 years old, and Ætatis suæ (i.e., Æ, "Aged," in the XX year of his Age) 47.

The word "Son" in the inscription is wedged in small superscript between the words wellbeloved and Mr.
