Joseph R. "Dody" Dittmer, 84, of Herman died Monday at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Kittanning.
Born Jan. 4, 1921, in Summit Township, he was a son of Joseph J. and Mary Wolpert Dittmer.
He retired in 1981 as postmaster at the Herman Post Office after 35 years. He also operated Dittmer's General Store in Herman from 1950 until it closed in 1975.
During World War II, he served in the Army.
Mr. Dittmer was a member St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman, the AARP, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and the Herman Volunteer Fire Department, where he was a life member and one of the original 10 members.
He is survived by six sons, Dr. Joseph J. Dittmer of North Field, Ohio, Sylvester S. Dittmer of Herman and James F., Frank L., Robert G. and Henry C. Dittmer, all of Butler; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Saeler of Fenelton, Mrs. Robert (Lynda) Shuler of Butler and Mrs. Leroy (Carolyn) Geibel Jr. of Cabot; and a sister, Germaine Lantz of Herman. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
His wife, Mary E. Raith Dittmer, whom he married Feb. 4, 1946, died Dec. 14, 1996. A son, a grandson, four brothers and four sisters also preceded him in death.
DITTMER - Friends of Joseph R. "Dody" Dittmer, who died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Herman. The Rev. John McCloskey O.F.M. Cap., will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary Parish Cemetery.
VFW Post 249 Ceremonial Squad will perform military honors at the church after the funeral Mass.
