David E. Atha, 94, of Bowling Green, Ohio, and formerly of Sandusky and Huron, passed away July 31, 2013, in Bowling Green.

David was born Aug. 16, 1918, in Dunkirk, Hardin County, Ohio, son of the late Chester and Bessie (Underwood) Atha. He married Jean (Instone) Atha on Feb. 17, 1946. David and Jean have been married for 67 years and she survives him in Bowling Green.

David was a 1937 graduate of Bowling Green High School. After graduation David enlisted in the U.S. Army prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. David served in the 168th Infantry, 34th Division during WWII and was stationed in England and Scotland. In 1943, David was involved with the invasion of Algeria, which led to him being first captured in North Africa by the Bedouins and later the German soldiers at the Battle of Kassaine Pass in February 1943. After being captured, David spent more than 33 months in various Prisoner of War camps, where he mainly worked on a farm and received two meals a day consisting of potato soup and black bread. The POW camp was eventually liberated by invading Russian forces.

After returning to Bowling Green from the war, David worked for the Lion's Store. He then began working for the Montgomery Ward's store in Bowling Green and later transferred to the Montgomery Ward's store in Sandusky. After being transferred to Sandusky, David took up banking and worked for Western Security Bank in Sandusky, and retired after 29 years. David and his wife enjoyed living on the shores of Lake Erie where they met many lifetime friends. David and his wife spent most of their marriage in Sandusky and Huron and recently returned to Bowling Green to be closer to family.

David was a former member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Bowling Green. After moving to Sandusky, he and his wife, Jean, joined Trinity United Methodist Church. After retirement, David and his wife moved to Huron where they attended Huron United Methodist with their friends. After returning to Bowling Green, David and his wife attended St. Mark's Lutheran Church.

David was a member of the Bowling Green American Legion Post 45, Sandusky American Legion Post 83, Fremont American Legion Post 121, Sandusky Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2529, a strong supporter and advocate for Disabled American Veterans, and was a member of the Kiwanis Club. In 2012, David was able to make the trip with Northwest Ohio Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to see the war memorials for the first time.

David enjoyed playing golf, bowling with his league, taking walks along Lake Erie with his wife Jean, and working on his collection of trains. David also enjoyed going on various outings with the Wood County Senior Citizens Center.

Along with his wife, Jean, David is survived by his sister-in-law, Carolyn (Art) Shetzer, of Bowling Green; nephews, Daryl (Shirley) Nutter, of Bowling Green, Steven (Shirley) Nutter, of Portage, Ohio, Deborah (Norm Romaker) Busdecker, of Bowling Green, Mike Instone, of Bowling Green, Jack (Debra) Horner, of Napoleon, Ohio, Maryland (Jack) Chambers and Cheryl (Tommy) Thompson, of Cochranton, Pa., and Susan (Dewayne) White, of Franklin, Pa.

David was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Atha; half sister, Bonnie Horner; and half brother, Alvin Atha.

Visitation for David will be 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 4, at Deck-Hanneman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1460 W. Wooster St.,, Bowling Green. Funeral Services will be at 11a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dale Schaeffer will officiating. Interment will follow in Sergent Cemetery.
