Fredrick H. "Fred" Galehouse, 92, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2013, with his family by his side.

Born on Sept. 12, 1920, in Barberton to Harry "Dick" W. and Esther (Weckesser) Galehouse, he was a life resident of Doylestown. A 1939 graduate of Doylestown High School, he attended the Ohio State University, earning a bachelor of mechanical engineering degree.

Fred was a U.S. Army veteran, spending time in Italy during World War II. Having grown up working on the family tree farm, he retired as owner/operator of Galehouse Drainage Inc., which he started in 1948 with his father's Buckeye No. 1 machine. Fred helped to teach and advise at the Overholt Drainage School since 1953.

He was a member of Doylestown United Methodist Church for more than 55 years, Chippewa Grange 1912 (currently Baughman), and Doylestown Lions Club, where he had perfect attendance since 1953, and was a past president. He was also a member of Ohio Farm Bureau Federation, American Society of Agricultural Engineers, American Society of Testing Materials, Pomona and National Grange, National Federation of Independent Business, a lifetime member of the Soil & Water Conservation Society, past president of both the Ohio and National Land Improvement Contractors of America, and a member of Wayne County Board of Health. Having achieved many recognitions and awards, he was most proud of his induction into the International Drainage Hall of Fame in 1988.

Fred is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Arlene in 2011 after 66 years of marriage; a brother, Jim; sisters, Ellen Chapman and Alice Galehouse; and a brother in-law, Don Chapman.

Surviving are children, Richard (Sue) Galehouse of Doylestown, Marjorie (Dave) Pond of Mansfield and Linda Galehouse of Doylestown; grandchildren, Tim (Anne) Pond, Mike (Paige) Pond, Matt (Laura) Pond, Hannah and Sarah Galehouse; great-grandchildren, Carter and Emily Pond; a sister in-law, Shirley Galehouse; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

Funeral service will be Monday, Aug. 5 at 11 a.m. at Doylestown United Methodist Church, 153 Church St., Doylestown 44230, with pastor Dale Warrick, officiating. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at Zak-Thacker & Monbarren Funeral Home, 132 N. Portage St., Doylestown, or one hour prior to the services Monday at the church. Online obituary and guest registry are available at www.zakmonbarrenfh.com.
