Mary Jane Cox and her sister Lucy Anne Cox were born January 7, 1829 to John and Lucy Armon Jennings Cox in Moulton, Lawrence, Alabama. Mary Jane married Tandy W. Walker September 24, 1846 in Lawrence County, Alabama and they lived there until his death in 1851. Tandy Walker was a doctor and an Alabama state representative and senator. Tandy Walker is buried in Lawrence County's McDonald Cemetery.
Mary Jane moved to Monroe County Mississippi, where the rest of her family was then living, and married Robert S. Adams in 1854. Robert Adams was a banker with Adams and Wicks, later Adams and Spratt. Mary Jane and her husband lived in a large house at 301 North Meridian Street in Aberdeen. The Adams French House has been meticulously restored and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Robert Adams died in 1873, and Mary Jane married Anderson H. French, a veterinary surgeon, in 1875. Mary Jane had no known children. She does mention an adopted daughter, Mary Adams, in her will. Her full name was Mary A. Bumpass.
Mary Jane died in 1899 with significant land holdings in Monroe County; she owned 1240 acres of prime farm land. She is interred in Odd Fellows Cemetery in plot 14 with her dad John Cox, sister Lucy Wicks, and second husband Robert Adams. Court documents indicate she was a smart business woman who was very family oriented.
