Charles was referred to as "Charlie. A resident of Austin, Indiana, he died unexpectedly at home at the age of 86. The son of Florence A. (Marcum) Spence and Henry C. Spence. On April 28th, 1942 he enlisted in the Army during World War II. being honorably discharged on October 17th, 1945. During his military career he earned the EAME Theater Ribbon and 4 bronze stars and a bronze service arrowhead. Charlie married Nellie Hall on October 29th, 1945, she died on June 29th, 2004 after 59 years of marriage. Mr. Spence worked at Cummins Engine Company as a Quality Technician, retiring in 1982 after 32 years of employment. He was a member of the Austin Baptist Church where he served as deacon for several yearsHe also was a member of the Austin Fire Department. He is survived by: two sons, Kenneth F. Spence from Scottsburg, Indiana and Keith D. Spence from Henryville, Indiana. Two sisters, Grace Bowling from Booneville, Kentucky and Bethel Warner from South Lebanon, Ohio. 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
