Graduate of Rutgers College, class of 1838. Cashier's clerk, lumber business, Civil Engineer, naval officer of the customhouse, deputy receiver of the Continental Life Insurance Company.
Civil War officer. Enrolled at Kingston, New York to serve three years and mustered as Captain,Company of Sappers and Miners, 20th New York State Militia, October 24, 1861; mustered out, November 17, 1861. Became Lt. Colonel, 120th New York State Volunteer Infantry. Twice wounded at the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863 while in command of the 120th. Was a crack rifle shot and wrote a pamphlet on rifle shooting and a series of articles on the Bible.
