OBITUARY-
Another teritorial pioneer of Mower county has gone to rest. Mrs. Mariah Rhoades died Saturday afternoon, Jan 1, 1910, at her home in Udolpho township of paralysis, aged 83 years. She was stricken three years ago and has been confined to her bed since. She has been a great sufferer for the past year.
Mariah Hunter was born in New York City, Oct 19, 1825.
She was married Oct 6, 1841, to Orsamus D. Rhoades. They moved from New York city to Ulster county, N.Y. and later to Chatauqua county. In 1852 they came west with their children and settled at Maquoketa, Iowa.
In 1856 they came to section 22 in the town of Udolpho, in this county and the family home has since been there.
Mr. Rhoades enlisted in Co. C, 9th Minn. Vols. in the Civil Ware and died Dec 24, 1864, a prisoner in Milan prison, Georgia.
Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades had a family of six children, Oscar J., Mary C. married to B. M. Carll, Malinda S. married to Norman Carll, Amelia J. married to C. King, Loretta E. married to J. Andrews, Hattie O. married to Sam C. Seavey. three of these Oscar, Mrs. B. M. Carll and Mrs. C. King survive. There was also an adopted son, Charles A. Rhoades.
Deceased was a member of the Free Will Baptist church, the first church organization in the township. She continued in the faith of the Gospel unto the end of life and awaited the last hour with confidence in her Lord. She was of kind and benevolent disposition and was a friend to many. She lived unselfishly for others and has gone to receive her reward.
Funeral services conducted by Reb. C. D. Belden of Austin, will be held at the family residence in Udolpho this Wednesday noon at 12 o'clock.
Interment in Lansing cemetery.
