Ed was the son of Samuel & Delilah (Socrider) Smith. They were killed when their wagon over-turned, after which Ed went to live with his aunt, Christina, & her husband, John Foster Preston.

He moved to Otterville, Cooper Co, MO from OH with the Preston family in the 1860's. In the following Federal Census record his name was shown as Oscar:

On June 13, 1870, Oscar, age 6, lived with John & Christina Preston, ages 52 & 54, on a farm in Lebanon, Cooper Co, MO and cousins, Joseph, age 23; Rufus, 21; Mary, 17; Sarah, 19; & twins, Samuel T. & John F., 15.

Oscar later changed his name to Ed D.

John Zihlman indicated that his gg-grandfather, John Preston, had recorded Oscar's name in his Bible as Gkes Smith, son of Samuel and Delia Smith, born June 19, 1863. John Z. said that after Gkes left the Preston family he changed his name to Ed. Ed & his family moved to McLean, TX. Here, he met Levi Preston, & they spent a lot of Sunday dinners in each others homes. John Z. said, "When asking the children of both families how they were kin, none of them knew." (They were first cousins, once removed.)
