He married Paula Zwally, who was from Germany, in 1940. To this happy union they had one son, Peter "Pete" Mangum/Mangrum.

He spent most of his life in Turner County and died in Tifton Hospital, Tifton, Georgia at the age of 80 on Januarty 20, 1988 due to ventricular arrhythmia due to an acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) he had suffered 1 and 1/2 hours prior to being admitted into the hospital.
