Edwin (Ed) F. Gostomski, age 93, of Plover, passed away peacefully at Stevens Point Care Center on Wednesday, July 24, 2013.
Ed Gostomski was born May 30, 1920 in Alban, Wisconsin, the eldest of seven children born to the late Nick and Jennie (Wysocki) Gostomski. He grew up and worked on the family farm in the town of Alban, Portage County. As a child, he attended a one room school in the Rosholt area. Ed entered the United States Army on February 12, 1942 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. He served his country as an Army SGT in Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe with Company L 273rd Infantry. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Stars, 2 oversea service bars, and 1 service stripe. He was honorably discharged from Ft. Sheridan on September 23, 1945.
Upon returning from World War II, Ed married the love of his life, Helen Mary Gorka, on September 27, 1944 in Chicago, Illinois. They enjoyed 68 wonderful years together. Ed worked at Bakerite Bakery for 31 years, finishing his career as a plant supervisor. He was instrumental in the Bakers and Confectioners Union, serving as president of the local chapter for a number of years.
Ed was active in the community serving as a member of the Central Wisconsin Apartment Association, the Stevens Point Lions Club, and the American Legion. He was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Stanislaus parish where he served as an usher for over 20 years. Although his most cherished activities centered around his family, he also enjoyed traveling with his wife Helen, taking occasional excursions to casinos, playing cards with friends and relatives, and dancing polkas into the evening. Ed will forever be remembered for his compassionate heart, quick wit, and love of conversation. He never knew a stranger and was always ready with a hug and a smile.
Ed is survived by his wife, Helen Gostomski of Plover and five children: Cheryl Bohm, Stevens Point; Dennis (Debbie) Waynesville, North Carolina; Lee Gostomski (Catherine Glennon), Plover; James Gostomski, Stevens Point; and Jeffrey Gostomski, Walnut Creek, California. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Margo (Tim) Jacob, McHenry, Illinois; Matthew (Tesa) Bohm, Waupaca; Melissa (David) Krueger, Rhinelander; Eric (Leslie) Gostomski, Williams Bay; Brent Gostomski, Madison; Kara Gostomski, Milwaukee; Katie Gostomski, Sedalia, Missouri; and Zoe Gostomski, Walnut Creek, California. Ed was the proud great-grandfather to Paige Jacob, Sydney Jacob, Dawson Bohm, Garrett Bohm, Sawyer Bohm, Abby Krueger, Sean Gostomski and Megan Gostomski. He is further survived by his sister, Grace (Leonard) Sopa , Greenfield; brother, Albert (Rita) Gostomski, Plover; brother-in-law, Kenneth Cwiklis, Franklin; sister-in-law, Lorraine, Greenfield; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Jennie Gostomski; infant brother, John; sister, Rose Cwiklis; brother, Robert Gostomski; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Arnold Konkol; and son-in-law, Robert Bohm.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 10:30 AM at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Stevens Point. Burial with full military honors will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 1:00 until 4:00 PM at the PLOVER Shuda Funeral Home, and again on Monday from 9:30 - 10:15 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be established in Ed's name to the Never Forgotten Honor Flight (for north central Wisconsin veterans) and Heartland Hospice Services.
