The oldest of six children born to a Dubuque society family, she was a beautiful girl and young woman before severe mental illness derailed any hopes for the future. As was the custom of the time, she endured barbaric treatments in an effort to cure or manage her symptoms. As she got older, she was able to obtain employment working in a care center. She was a hard worker and did well in that setting. She was also kind and generous with her nieces and nephews when they came to visit and was loved by her brothers and sister.
