Born to German immigrants, EA was a twin to Augustus Caesar, known as AC, Buettell. The boys, along with their brothers, formed Buettell Brothers, a wholesale company selling stationery, and all manner of goods. They built a prominent downtown Dubuque building which has recently been torn down to make room for an expansion of the Dubuque law enforcement agencies. EA married Mildred Kopp and they had two children. He died unexpectedly in his prime of acute indigestion, according to the medical examiner. It was, in all likelihood, an abdominal aortic aneurysm, as these are know to run in the men in the Buettell family.
