A native of Fayetteville, Ohio, he was ordained in 1938. "Father Berwanger's vigor and optimism challenge all of us not to let the darkness of sin and death overcome the light of faith," said the Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.
He leaves a friend, the Rev. Richard Walling, and a cousin, the Rev. Jeff Kemper.
Mass: 10:30 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Mt. St. Mary's Seminary, Cincinnati. Visitation: 5 p.m. Thursday at the chapel. Arrangements: T.P. White & Sons Funeral Home.
