Mamie was one of seven students to graduate from the eighth grade of a school in the town of Pittsboro, Indiana, in the year of 1884. She attended Central Normal College to further her education, and graduated from there with honors. It is stated that she also taught there several terms. She consented to be the first principal of the new school in Pittsboro, located over the Brumfield Store. This was the first Pittsboro High School. The school was moved to the Sawyer Block Building, on the south east corner of the intersection. She was the teacher there for the first two terms.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Reynolds Spees, age 61, will be held this afternoon at the home of her sister, Mrs. Cora Robbins, near Pittsboro, with burial at Lizton. Mrs. Spees died at an Indianapolis hospital after an extended illness.
She is very kindly remembered in Hendricks county as a well known teacher, the first principal of Pittsboro high school. She was a graduate of Central Normal College.
She is survived by her husband, George W. Spees; her mother, Mrs. Sarah Reynolds, of Pittsboro; three sisters, Eva Reynolds, Crawfordsville; Maud Reynolds, Buffalo, and Mrs. Robbins and three brothers, Chester and Oscar Reynolds, of Pittsboro, and Isaac Reynolds, living in Wisconsin.
