Leander Yach, 82, died Friday, December 19, 2008 at Aspirus Hospital, Wausau WI.
He was born March 22, 1926 in Hatley, son of the late Bernard and Martha (Woznicki) Yach. He married Lorraine Mesalk on April 29, 1950 in Wausau. She survives. Lee graduated from Birnamwood High School in 1943. Lee continued his education taking many courses at the Wausau Technical Institute.
Lee worked as plant manager in the cabinet industry for the greater part of his working life holding that position with Connor Forest Industries in Wausau until 1985, where he began as a plant laborer. After the Wausau plant closed he was the plant manager at Excel Wood Products in Shellbyville, Indiana and Ultracraft Cabinet Company in Liberty, North Carolina.
Lee served in the US Marine Corp during WWII being stationed at Pearl Harbor and on the Island of Guam. While in the Marines he played on the Marine All-star Baseball Team. He was especially proud to be part of the Pearl Harbor Victory parade at the end of the war.
Throughout his life Lee enjoyed baseball. He was pitcher for his team in the Industrial League and coached Little League during the years his son, Steve, was involved. Besides baseball Lee enjoyed many sports and he golfed regularly after his retirement in 1990. Lee also loved woodworking, fishing, and time spent at his cottage in Northern Wisconsin. Spending time with friends and family was very important to him throughout his life. Lee was active in his church, serving on the council, finance committee, ushering, counting and as a member of the dart ball team until the time of his death. He was also active in The Smoke Free Wisconsin campaign.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his son Stephen (Michelle Colcord) Yach, Kronenwetter: granddaughters Jennifer (Shane) Boettcher, Merrill: Cindy Tesch, Dover Arkansas: great grandchildren, Cole and Caitlyn Boettcher; brothers Myron (Jean) Yach, Milwaukee; Ronald, West Plains, MO; sisters Alice (Ralph) Gates, Waukesha; Janice (Richard) Decker, Indiana and half-sister Gladys Yach, Manitowoc. Lee was preceded in death by his half-brother Irvin and sisters Bernita and Delia.
Memorial services will be at 6:00 p.m. December 26, 2008 at Grace United Church of Christ, 535 S 3rd Avenue, Wausau. The Rev. Wayne Drueck will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until the time of the service at the church.
