Mary Catherine Gardenhire was the daughter of Circuit Judge, Erasmus Lee Gardenhire, and Mary McMillin Gardenhire. Her father served a term in the Confederate Congress from 1862-1865.

She married Mark Lowrey Clark on 20 Aug 1868 in White Co. They had two sons:
- Erasmus Lee Clark
- an infant son that died at birth, 25 Sept 1875.
They had four daughters:
- Elizabeth "Bessie"
- Anne Benton
- Ellan "Ella"
- Rassalee

Her granddaughter, Sammie Clark Sims, wrote in her memoirs, "The Mark and Mary Gardenhire Clarks lived in a large, old brick home one mile out of Sparta. Nearby was a brick mill, Clark's Mill. These places were torn down in the 1960's to make way for the Appalachain Highway."
