Earl Raymond Fowler of Emporia died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009, at Stormont-Vail Regional Medical Center in Topeka.

He was 82. Mr. Fowler owned and operated Blue Stem Truck Line in Emporia. He also farmed south of Emporia and worked with his son, Stan Fowler, at Printing Plus for the last 20 years.

The son of John Percy and Gene Grace Hopkins Fowler, he was born June 24, 1927, at Emporia. He attended Fowler School House and graduated from Emporia High School. He married Twila Lou Wills on April 8, 1956, at Osage City. She survives.

Mr. Fowler was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He served on the board of the Kansas Farmer’s Union for more than 20 years and was active in legislation involving agriculture, traveling to Topeka and Washington, D.C. He was active in local Democratic Party politics and twice ran for the state legislature. He served on the Emporia/ Lyon County Metropolitan Area Planning and Zoning Commission and the Kansas Kan Work Committee. He was a founding member of the Flint Hills Antique Tractor Club and was a licensed pilot.

He is also survived by one son, Stanley Fowler of Emporia; three daughters, Nancy Hoover of Independence, Mo., Carol Fowler of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sandra Fowler of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Jane Neff; and one brother, Ted Fowler.

The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Fowler Cemetery, southeast of Emporia. The family will meet friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Memorial contributions to the Farmer’s Union Youth Activities or the Emporia Public Library may be sent in care of the funeral home, P.O. Box 175, Emporia, KS 66801.
