Mary Alma Finklea Munn of Pamplico died early Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, in a Florence hospital after an illness.
Mrs. Munn, widow of Albert Alonzo Stitch Munn, who died March 22, 1965, was born on Feb. 14, 1916, in Hymanville, daughter of the late Eulalia Cox and Furman Henry Arnaud Big John Finklea. She was educated at Hymanville and Pamplico Schools, graduating in 1932. She entered Winthrop College at the age of 16 and graduated in 1936.
She joined Beulah Baptist Church at an early age and continued to be an active member until recent years.
Mrs. Munn retired from teaching in the Pamplico Schools in 1981. She was a charter member of the Dr. Thomas Finckley Chapter of Colonial Dames of the 17th Century and an at-large member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Surviving are a daughter, Elizabeth Betsy Eulalia Munn Smith and a son-in-law, Thomas E. Smith Jr., of Pamplico; two granddaughters, Mary Dresden Smith Floyd (Scott P. Floyd) of Pamplico and Amy Louise Smith Askins (Robert W. Bill Askins) of Friendfield; five great-grandchildren, Thomas Preston Floyd, Mary Caroline Floyd, Drayton Scott Floyd, Mary Palmer Askins and Elizabeth Sue Askins; a niece, Sarajane Finklea Barrineau (Lt. Col. (Ret.) Ron Barrineau) of Columbia; a godson, Albert Alonzo Munn IV of Florence; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Hannah Cooper Munn of Florence; a special childhood friend and companion, Helen Bessie Gibbs Munnerlyn (James) and a special family friend, Sadie Gibbs Smith, both of Hyman.
Two brothers, Furman Henry A. Finklea Jr. (1944) and Charles Commander Finklea II (2003) preceded Mrs. Munn in death.
Memorials may be made to the Beulah Baptist Church, 218 Big Swamp Road, Pamplico, SC 29583.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today, Sunday, Sept. 4, in the Beulah Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Woodside Cemetery in Pamplico, directed by Stoudenmire-Dowling Funeral Home of Florence.
