The son of Valentine & Maria Catherine (Miller) Gable, in 1860 he and brother Amos lived with and/or worked for blacksmith Jacob Reidle in York Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 10" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, mustered into federal service at York November 5 as a private with Co. E, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York. Drafted a second time in 1864, he instead enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 23, 1864, as a sergeant with Co. A, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.

He married Susan Clemens February 3, 1867, in York and fathered Charles Ezra (b. 10/21/67), William Arthur (b. 02/23/69), Alice Irene (b. 05/11/71), Bertha Kate (b. 11/21/74), Mary Ann (b. 01/27/76), Susan Elena (b. 01/07/79), Emma Gertie (b. 10/03/81), and Lucinda Buelah (b. 10/05/84). After the war, he lived in Hopewell Township, York County, and there died from "general debility [due to] dilated right & left ventricle with . . . valvular lesions.
