He lived for several years with Thomas and Elizabeth Bales, believe they were relatives
At seventeen he went on his own to do some farming. He joined the Union Army during the Civil War and at wars end he married Elizabeth Sproles on Sept.9,1865. For awhile they moved back and forth between Va.and Tn.
James and Elizabeth were the parents of at least nine children as follows.
