Obituary: Glenn Melvin Girton from Montague passed away on March 11, 2012 at the age of 88. Glenn was born on Aug. 7, 1923 in Mason, Ohio to Dean Stanley Girton and Flossie May Snell-Girton.

Glenn had a long, adventurous and fulfilling life. Prior to the events at Pearl Harbor, Glenn enlisted in the United States Marines at the age of 17, with the signature of his mother. Glenn proudly served his country in the 3rd Amphibian Tractor Battalion and was involved in five major campaigns in the Pacific. After his service ended, Glenn served as a police officer for over 30 years. He initially worked as a patrol officer in San Bernardino, Calif. and was then hired as a traffic officer for the California Highway Patrol, later advancing to sergeant.

Glenn's death is a loss for many of his friends and fraternal brothers and sisters. Glenn was a 57-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Shrine, and was a past patron of Stella Chapter #39, Order of the Eastern Star. Glenn was an active member of the Marine Corps League and the American Legion.

Glenn was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Elizabeth, his brothers Dean "Duke" Girton and Francis Girton and his grandson Gilly Salinas.

Glenn is survived by many loving family members, including his son David (Nancy) Girton, his daughter Janice (David) Jenks, his son Scott (Juli Johnson) Erdman, his son Dan (Judi) Girton, his daughter Debbie (John) Bruce, six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren, as well as numerous close friends.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2012 at the Shorten & Ryan Funeral Home in Mason, Ohio. A memorial service will be held in Yreka on April 1, 2012. Information to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Marine Corps League.
